Speech Mashups for Accessibility
WINNER: Federal Communications Commission Prize
Today, our real and virtual lives are intertwined as never before.
The web makes it easier for people to connect to information, entertainment, finance, education, healthcare and each other wherever they are. But moving everything online can leave some people out. For people with visual disabilities, print disabilities or hearing impairment access to online information and services is limited. We can make web-based services and applications more accessible using speech technologies including text-to-speech and speech-to-text. In this way technology is made more inclusive and everyone can participate.
Speech technologies are difficult and expensive to develop, run and maintain. This makes it hard for individuals, non-profits or small companies that want to develop assistive technologies and services.
We have put our world-class speech technologies, including text-to-speech and speech-to-text, 'in the cloud' as a 'speech mashup', making them available anytime, anywhere, on any platform or device. The development of speech-enabled applications is now limited only by the imaginations of users and developers.
In this presentation we show how our speech mashup can be used to create assistive technologies. Our speech technologies are available to all. In particular, we welcome the participation of developers and users of assistive technologies. Try it out for free, and contact us with questions and comments.
Thank you!
